Quinta da Regaleira

So today after lunch we decided to take a ride to Sintra and to once again go and visit the Quinta da Regaleira.

 Throughout the year the Palace, the Chapel and eventual exhibition spaces are closed half an hour before the Quinta.

Closed 24 and 25 December and 1 January.

On 31 December the opening hours are 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM (last visit at 1:00 PM).

NOTICE: The administrative services are closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. On these days, any subject should be dealt face-to-face at ticket offices.

A little bit of History about the Quinta da Regaleira ;)

The gorgeous house was constructed by a wealthy Portuguese businessman Carvalho Monteiro in 1904, this then gave rise to the residence’s local name of “Palace of the Monteiro Millionaire”. It took  over 6 years to construct, but after the death of Carvalho Monteiro, Waldemar d’Orey purchased it. The house stayed within the family until 1987, when it was then bought by a Japanese business for private functions. The local government of Sintra reclaimed this important national monument it 1997(birth of my son aha) and opened it to the public in 1998.

The outside is decorated with gothic turrets, carved gargoyles and other ornate features. The building inside spreads over 5 floors.  To me the real beauty of the Quinta are the grounds that were inspired by the owner’s mystic ideologies. All hidden in the grounds one can find references to the Masons, the Templar Knights and dark alchemy. One of the strangest features is the well. In the well one can find a concealed passage that after you have descended 27 meters it connects to a series of tunnels that run the length of the garden.

Just  a word of warning, going there takes some doing as the roads are not wide and especially on weekends it's quite caotic, so it could take some doing to find parking ;) but don't let that keep you away it is so worth your while!  Oh and do take comfy shoes as there is lot of climbing and then coming down again where you'll need your brakes in good shape (meaning shoes)  aha
