Caves of Mira de Aire

Today being Sunday and the fact that tomorrow is a public holiday we decided to go visit the famous caves of Mira de Aire.

Here is a little about these gorgeous caves.

The Caves of Mira de Aire (Grutas de Mira de Aire) are one of the largest and most famous cave systems in Portugal. Located in the municipality of Mira de Aire, near the town of Porto de Mós, they are part of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park. Here are some key points about these caves:

1. **Discovery and Public Opening**:

   - The caves were discovered on July 27, 1947, but were not opened to the public until August 11, 1974. Since then, they have become a major tourist attraction.

2. **Geological Features**:

   - The caves are composed of limestone and feature a variety of impressive geological formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and curtains. These formations were created over millions of years through the slow deposition of calcium carbonate by dripping water.

3. **Tourist Experience**:

   - The tour of the caves covers a distance of about 600 meters, although the total length of the cave system is much longer. Visitors descend approximately 110 meters underground.

   - The caves are well-lit and equipped with pathways and there are 683 steps, making them accessible to most people. The guided tour provides insights into the formation and history of the caves.

4. **Biodiversity**:

   - The caves host a range of subterranean wildlife, including bats (which I'm happy to say that I didn't see any)and various types of invertebrates that have adapted to the cave environment.

5. **Significance**:

   - The Caves of Mira de Aire are considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal. They attract thousands of visitors each year and are an important natural and cultural heritage site.

6. **Visitor Facilities**:

   - The site includes facilities such as a visitor center, a restaurant, and souvenir shops. There is also a water park nearby (which wasn't in use yet), adding to the attractions for tourists.

These caves are a fascinating destination for anyone interested in geology, natural history, or simply looking to explore an impressive natural wonder.

Now enjoy the photos.
